House Rejects Proposal to Increase State and Local Tax Deduction Cap of $10k for Married Couples

House Democrats and Republicans voted against a proposal to increase the cap on state and local tax deductions for married couples with adjusted gross incomes below $500,000 for the fiscal year 2023. The bill aimed to raise the deduction cap from $10,000 to $20,000 for eligible couples, but the vote marked the end of its consideration.

Democrats didn't vote for the proposal, blaming Republicans for voting to institute the cap in the first place. Before the vote, House Ways and Means Committee member Bill Pascrell, D-N.J., said that the $10,000 cap has been a heavy burden for middle-class families and for public services that had depended on the amounts received before the cap was in place. He added that Democrats have voted several times on the floor and in committee to repeal the cap fully and that Lawler's proposal fell short of what Americans deserve.
